Zusammenfassung
Der Prozeß eines Tumorleidens stellt eine komplexe Sequenz von Ereignissen dar, in deren Rahmen zahlreiche biologische Interaktionen zwischen dem Tumorgewebe und dem Wirtsorganismus ablaufen. Sieht man von Patienten mit einem lokal ausgedehnten Tumorgeschehen ab, das über die Freisetzung von biologisch aktiven Mediatoren die Physiologie des Gesamtorganismus beeinflussen kann, so wird die fortgeschrittene Tumorerkrankung in erster Linie durch den Prozeß der Metastasierung bestimmt. Trotz aller Fortschritte bei der operativen Behandlung des Primärtumors und den Bemühungen urn eine (adjuvante) Chemo- und Radiotherapie stellt die Metastasierung bei vielen bösartigen Organtumoren mehr denn je die häufigste Todesursache eines Krebspatienten dar. Von daher gesehen kommt dem Verständnis der Mechanismen, mit den en Zellen eines malignen Tumors zu Metastasen führen, eine zentrale Bedeutung für die Biologie und Pathologie eines fortschreitenden und fortgeschrittenen Tumorleidens zu. Somit stellt die Metastasenforschung heute für die klinische und experimentelle Onkologie eine der großen Herausforderungen dar, der sich in den letzten lahren die unterschiedlichsten Forschungszweige gestellt haben und zu der inzwischen eine Fülle von neuen Erkenntnissen vermittelt wurde [Übersichten: 18, 21, 36, 42, 50, 51, 55].
