Cost-Effectiveness Analysis, Cost-Benefit Analysis and the Value of Life in Health Care and Prevention

  • Chapter
Costs and Benefits in Health Care and Prevention

Abstract

This paper aims to introduce the concepts of Cost-Effectiveness Analysis (CEA) and Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) to non-economists who are working in the health field. Justifications as to why CEA and CB A are needed are followed by descriptions of each technique with examples from the health care sector. Finally, various methods of valuing savings in human life (one of the major benefits of health care intervention) are discussed.
