Summary
This section is dedicated to the situation of the information systems in China. After an overview on the progress in the development of computer-based retrieval systems over the past ten years and a description of the unsolved issues in this area, a possible structural organization is defined and in this framework ISTIC is positioned and its main activities and objectives are described.
Finally an interesting survey on the users needs in the Chong Ming County (Shanghai) is presented and many aspects of the possible implementation of a pilot experience in this county are addressed.
