Abstract
The experimental discovery of a remarkable phenomenon of loss of strength in superconducting metals and alloys will first be described, followed by a similar phenomenon due to the rapid decrease of the number of phonons at low temperatures. This loss of strength of metallic materials definitely surpasses all imagination. In this chapter, these phenomena are discussed in detail. Finally dynamic theories of the strength of materials are described taking account of the interaction of moving dislocations with electrons and phonons (inertial effects) as well as the effect of random distributions of obstacles on the dislocation motion (unzipping effect). We conceive that these studies may contribute to the development of research on the strength of materials from the qualitative to the quantitative level.
