Summary
Acute lack of oxygen, as a consequence of any kind of asphyxia, principally influences all oxygen dependent pathways. Moreover, it changes humoral systems, which depend on stress.
During the early development of analytical procedures, many biochemical parameters were measured in order to distinguish between asphyxia and other causes of death. Results of the early studies have been partly confirmed by recent investigations using novel methods. At present, however, the unambiguous diagnosis of obstructive asphyxia by biochemical analysis alone is not possible. The authors review published results and critically evaluate the data.
