Zusammenfassung

Altern ist jener Teil des Lebenszyklus, der sich durch zunehmende Funktionseinschränkungen in vielen Bereichen des täglichen Lebens kennzeichnet. Als Teilaspekt des Alterns, das der Mensch in Form körperlicher, geistiger, familiärer und anderer sozialer Veränderungen erlebt, nehmen viele ältere Personen auch eine Veränderung ihres Schlafes wahr: Sie schlafen subjektiv weniger tief, wachen häufiger als gewohnt auf, ohne sofort wieder einschlafen zu können, und sind oft auch am frühen Morgen wach, ohne beruflich oder anderweitig zu frühem Aufstehen veranlaßt zu sein. Den subjektiv empfundenen Veränderungen des Schlafes entsprechen häufig objektive Merkmale, die sich in polygraphischen Schlafuntersuchungen zeigen; im Einzelfall können aber auch Diskrepanzen zwischen der subjektiven und der objektiven „Schlafqualität“bestehen.
