Zusammenfassung

Zwischen dem Schlaf des Kindes und dem des Erwachsenen bestehen entwicklungspsychologisch bedingt mehr quantitative als qualitative Unterschiede. Sind zunächst zentralnervöse Reifungsvorgänge für die Entwicklung des kindlichen Schlafes verantwortlich, so gewinnt nach dem Säuglingsalter die Eltern-Kind-Interaktion drastisch an Bedeutung für das Einschlafen (Bettgehzeit, Einschlafvorbereitungen, Lichtlöschen), aber auch für das Durchschlafen (Beistand bei nächtlichem Erwachen). Aus entwicklungspsychologischen Gründen (z.B. altersspezifische Ängste) ist das Interesse des Kindes dem seiner Bezugsperson bezüglich des Schlafverhaltens häufig gegenläufig; erst mit zunehmendem Alter wird ihm auch bezüglich der Schlafregulation mehr Autonomie zugestanden.
