Abstract

This study was designed to collect selected data on obstetrical and psychiatric characteristics of patients who were admitted to the psychiatric service of a 1200-bed general hospital within 6 months following delivery. The hospital serves as the major clinical teaching facility for a university medical school. It is supported in large part by public funds and, in addition to being a referral center for private patients, serves as the primary hospital for the indigent, low-socioeconomic individuals of an area of approximately 1.5 million population. The collected data will serve as the basis for future investigations of postpartum psychiatric disorders.
