Abstract

Thousands of thoracoscopies were carried out for the lysis of pleural adhesions (pneumonolysis) between 1910, the year the technique was in vented by the Swede Jacobaeus, and 1950–1955 when it became obsolete following the discovery of antituberculous drugs. These thoracoscopies were carried out only under local anesthesia, with little or no antituberculous medication, using only primitive instruments and lighting.
