Abstract

The therapy of peritonitis, above all that of the severe form of intra-abdominal infection, was given new impulses at the beginning of the 1980s. With the development of antibiotics and their planned administration in peritonitis mortality rates could be significantly reduced. Further improvement of therapy was achieved by the development of intensive care. However, the mortality rate with severe diffuse peritonitis still amounts to about 50%. This induced thoughts as to how the surgical therapy of peritonitis could be further improved.
