Summary
To advance our knowledge of relations between somatic illnesses and childhood psychopathology, we need standardized procedures for the assessment and taxonomy of behavioral/emotional problems. Such procedures are also necessary for combining data from different cultures to enhance our understanding of the relation between physical illnesses and psychopathology. Because children’s functioning varies according to different situations and interaction partners, it is necessary to obtain data from multiple sources. Only a few studies investigating correlates of physical illness have used such methodology. In this article, we present a general approach to the assessment of children’s problem behavior and competencies that is applicable across a wide range of situations, informants, and cultural conditions. We summarize findings showing that parent and teacher versions of the same standardized rating forms produced very similar results across the Netherlands and the United States, and that cross-cultural similarities in syndromes derived from parent ratings supported the generalizability of such syndromes. Cross-national replications of the sort presented here can contribute to the cumulative knowledge needed to advance our knowledge of children’s behavioral/emotional responses to illness.
