Summary

The aim of this research is to investigate: 1) the distinctive features of fear cognition in children hospitalized in an “open” pediatric ward, 2) the attitudes of their parents towards parental roles and the structure of marital relationship during a child’s hospitalization. The sample consists of 96 hospitalized children aged 6–12 and their parents. A “fear in hospital drawing”, a “child in hospital drawing”, a D.A.P. test, and simple sentence completions were obtained from the children, and a questionnaire providing similar information was completed by their parents.

The children’s results show three main representation systems in children’s mental processing, which partially depend on the seriousness of their illness.

In the parents’ results, discrepancies and problems in marital communication are found. The couple seems to organize itself assuming a very stereotyped attitude towards the mother’s role, which is considered unique both in the expressive and the instrumental functions.
