Abstract
A plant cell differs from an animal one in many respects, one of the main ones being the presence of a rather rigid cell wall which functions as a skeleton and protects the cell contents against the action of osmosis, the disruptive action of external mechanical forces, and the penetration of pathogens (bacteria etc.) into the cell.
