Abstract

The material presented in the section ‘Biosynthesis of Cellulose’ demonstrates the progress made in understanding the mechanisms of the synthesis of structural polysaccharides, viz. establishing intermediate stages in the glucose-to- polysaccharides conversion, cell localization of synthetases responsible for the synthesis of cellulose, hemicelluloses, pectic substances, and cell-wall proteins. Studies began with molecular mechanisms of the synthesis of cellulose microfibrils, on the role of plasmalemma components in this process. Importance of the protein microtubules in orientation of the newly-formed cellulose microfibrils in the cell wall is demonstrated.
