Fungal Infections and AIDS

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 96))

Abstract

Fungi feature prominently among the opportunistic organisms which can cause disease during the development of infection with HIV virus. The fungi encountered are the same as those found in other situations characterized by depressed cell-mediated immunity. Some mycoses are superficial - cutaneous or mucocutaneous - and generally benign, e.g. candidosis, dermatophytosis, pityrosporosis; others are deep-seated and potentially serious, e.g. cryptococcosis, histoplasmosis, coccidioidomycosis (Armstrong 1988; Holmberg and Meyer 1986; Schaffner 1984; Spencer and Jackson 1989). Aspergillosis and disseminated candidosis are rarely found in this situation, but a number of more obscure fungal infections are now being reported in the literature.
