Abstract

The 340 km coastline of the GDR includes a large system of internal coastal waters (Fig. 1). With a total area of some 1600 km2, these boddens and haffs contain over 6 × 109 m3 of water. In view of their mean water depth of 3.5 to 4 m, they must be considered as being shallow.
