Abstract
The central region of our solar system contains a commonplace G2 main-sequence star in the prime of life: the sun. It is the source of the light that illuminates and warms the earth, and it thus sustains life on our home planet. Humans have, from prehistoric beginnings to the present time, watched the sun with both bold admiration and scientific curiosity. They have continually refined their observational means, moving from the naked eye to the present sophisticated telescopes on the ground or in space. Modern science has unraveled mysteries of the sun, which even our contemporaries would not have dreamed of a few decades ago.
