Schizoaffective Disorders in Clinical Routine: Symptomatology, Etiology, and Course

Abstract

In 1933, Kasanin introduced the concept of “schizoaffective psychoses” (SAP) to describe a group of young patients with a seemingly normal premorbid personality, who present a sudden onset of the disorder with both schizophrenic as well as affective symptoms and who have a good prognosis. This group of psychotic disorders has met with increasing interest ever since. This refers both to theoretical considerations about the development of nosological concepts (see Pichot 1986) as well as a great number of empirical research activities on various levels (see Brockington and Meltzer 1983; Clayton 1982; Hilz 1987; Procci 1976; Tsuang and Marneros 1986).
