Abstract

In our first book on this topic (Marneros and Tsuang 1986a), we investigated the differences and similarities between the schizoaffective disorders and other atypical disorders (Marneros and Tsuang 1986b; Perris 1986; Pichot 1986; Strömgren 1986; Tsuang and Marneros 1986). Taking a historical point of view, Angst (1986) pointed out that the concept of schizoaffective disorders is not new, having clearly emerged in the work of Kahlbaum (1863), who described the “vesania typica circularis.” Angst showed that the idea of schizoaffective disorder has always been present in European psychiatry but that it never achieved the prominence of Kraepelin’s (1920) concept of a dichotomy. Although Kraepelin himself recognized the existence of a group between schizophrenia and the affective disorders, he considered this intermediate area to be a great weakness of his Zweiteilungsprinzip — the principle of the dichotomy of psychoses.
