Abstract
Numerous studies have shown that children with developmental speech and language problems are at a much higher risk of suffering psychiatric disorders than the population as a whole (Cantwell and Baker 1985; Beitchman et al. 1986; Amorosa et al. 1986; Esser and Schmidt 1987; Mayr, in press). Why there is a high correlation, with up to 50% of children with speech and language problems showing behavioral disorders, is unclear. The increase does not seem to be due to an increase in any one particular disorder as compared to the distribution seen in children of the same age but without speech/language problems. In a small proportion of children it seems likely that the psychiatric disorder is a reaction to the speech and language problem, whereas it is extremely rare for the opposite to be true, i.e., for a psychiatric disorder to be the cause of a speech and language problem. In general, however, the most likely explanation for the correlation is that a common factor is responsible for both the abnormal behavior and the abnormal speech and language development. One such factor has been seen in early interference with normal brain development (Lou et al. 1984).
