Focal Necrosis: Primary Event in the Pathogenesis of Chronic Pancreatitis?

  • Conference paper
Chronic Pancreatitis

Abstract

Pancreatic pseudocyst, the residual of focal fat necrosis in acute pancreatitis [11, 12], is also a common finding in chronic pancreatitis [1, 2, 17, 20]. Yet its significance for the pathogenesis of chronic pancreatitis has been neglected for many years, owing to the widely accepted view that acute and chronic pancreatitis differ in etiology and pathogenesis [18]. Here we will briefly review the pathology of focal necrosis and pseudocysts in chronic pancreatitis and discuss their possible role in the pathogenesis of the disease.
