Chronic Pancreatitis with Inflammatory Mass in the Head of the Pancreas: A Special Entity?

  • Conference paper
Chronic Pancreatitis

Abstract

From a histopathological point of view, chronic alcoholic pancreatitis generally involves the whole pancreas [1–3]. However there is a small subgroup of patients (5%–10%), obviously in an early phase of the development of the disease, who suffer from focal lesions of chronic pancreatitis. Mainly data from surgical literature have shown that patients with chronic pancreatitis undergoing surgery for pain or complications often exhibit a preponderant lesion either in the right (head) or in the left part (body and tail) of the gland. For this reason, surgical techniques in chronic pancreatitis have been developed and applied either to resect the pancreatic head and preserve the body and tail or vice versa [4, 5].
