Alcohol, the Alimentary Tract and Pancreas: Facts and Controversies

  • Conference paper
Chronic Pancreatitis

Abstract

Alcohol has been used, and abused, since biblical times. Noah, of Ararat fame, was perhaps the first drunkard — “and he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent” (Genesis 9:21). Lot’s daughters plied their father with drink to suit their own nefarious ends — “come, let us make our father drink wine,… that we may preserve seed of our father” (Genesis 19:32), while Samson’s mother was told to avoid alcohol to ensure a successful pregnancy — “now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink no wine, nor strong drink” (Judges 13:4). The prophets of old, it seems, were fully aware of the fetal alcohol syndrome.
