The Carbon and Oxygen Isotope Composition of Pancreatic Stones

Abstract

Human pancreatic stones consist predominantly of calcium carbonate. In this note I report on a study of the carbon and oxygen isotope composition of pancreatic calculi from three different geographic areas (India, Italy, Federal Republic of Germany). The objectives were

  1. a)

    to relate isotopic variations to geographic enrivonment,

  2. b)

    to evaluate the extent to which biochemical isotopic fractionations are significant in stone formation, and

  3. c)

    to compare the carbon isotopic composition of pancreatic stones with that of kidney stones.
