Abstract

It is well known that fluctuations of environmental characteristics may play an important role in determining the survival of fish larvae. Since coastal embayments represent spawning and nursery areas for numerous fish species (Adams, 1976; Reis & Dean, 1981), changes in the environmental conditions, such as unusual highly-dense phytoplankton blooms, may be expected to cause severe effects on the survival of the early developmental stages of fish.
