Abstract
Throughout the summers of 1985 and 1986, a previously undescribed, small (2–3 µm) chrysophyte bloomed monospecifically (109 cells l−1) in many shallow, coastal estuaries of the northeast coast of the United States (Cosper et al., 1987). These blooms were popularly referred to as the “Brown Tide” due to the intense brown coloring of the waters. The ultrastructure and morphology of the new Chrysophyte responsible for the “Brown Tides”, Aureococcus anophagefferens has been described by Sieburth et al. (1988).
