Part of the book series: Coastal and Estuarine Studies ((COASTAL,volume 35))

Abstract

Many of the chapters in this volume deal with the intense algal bloom or “brown tide” that developed in Narragansett Bay and other nearby coastal waters during the summer of 1985. This was not the first algal bloom to discolor the bay, however, or the most destructive in its impact on other forms of life. Over a period of perhaps half a dozen years around the turn of this century, Narragansett Bay was marked during late summer by recurring “red”, “reddish-brown”, or “chocolate” tides, the most dramatic of which occurred from late August through early October of 1898.
