Abstract

Many coastal embayments along the Atlantic coastline have been plagued, since 1985, with large accumulations of a microalga, Aureococcus anopahagefferens. These algae blooms are known as “brown tides” because of the resulting water color and they have had a deleterious effect on the estuarine environment (Cosper et al., 1987).
