Violent Relaxation: Difficulties with Maximum Entropy States

Abstract

We prove that for all entropy-like concave functionals stationary points do not exist for arbitrary fixed total mass and energy, considering isolated self-gravitating systems in ℜ3. Only for a special choice for mass and energy, solutions of the variational problem are possible.
