Interacting Systems in an IRAS-Selected Sample of Galaxies

Abstract

In an investigation of the physical properties of 100 optically faint extragalactic IRAS sources, deep optical CCD images and long-slit spectra have been obtained with the 3.5 m telescope of the Calar Alto Observatory. These data show that interacting systems are very frequent among infrared selected galaxies and that interaction is a very effective trigger in generating infrared-luminous systems due to high starburst activity.
