Abstract

In the ternary intercalation compounds of graphite, two of the three components which form the system are intercalated in the third. In Sects. 9.1–4, the compounds described contain the two components as solid solutions of various types: there are true homogeneous dispersions of component A in B; others contain atoms or molecules of type A in strong interaction — somewhat similar to solvation — with atoms (or molecules) of component B. Even if the interactions are sufficiently strong to form a new intercalated species, the homogeneity of the dispersion legitimizes their classification as a solid solution. In the compounds described in Sect. 9.5, each intercalated component is localized in fairly extensive domains free of atoms (or molecules) of the other kind, thus forming “bi-intercalation” or, if there are more than two intercalated species, “multi-intercalation” compounds. In Sect. 9.6, the compounds described contain one of the species intercalated in a fluorinated carbon lattice formed by the reaction of the second “intercalated” species (namely fluorine) on the graphite matrix. Strictly speaking, this series should not be classified with the intercalation compounds of graphite. Nevertheless, in view of its direct filiation from graphite and of the similarity in the mode of preparation, it was deemed worthwile to retain its description.
