Lattice Dynamics I: Neutron Studies

Abstract

This chapter reviews inelastic neutron scattering investigations of the lattice dynamics of graphite intercalation compounds. Pristine graphite and its intercalation compounds exhibit phonon frequencies as high as 200 meV. Most existing neutron sources allow the investigation of phonon frequencies only up to about 100 meV. It is therefore the lower part of the phonon dispersion of graphite intercalation compounds which is discussed here. Complementary studies by infrared and Raman techniques are reviewed by Solin in Chap. 5 of this volume.
