Die Nieren, paarig angelegte Organe mit einem Gesamtgewicht von etwa 250 g und einem Längsdurchmesser von etwa 12 cm beim Erwachsenen, bestehen aus jeweils 1 Mio. Funktionseinheiten, den Nephren. Diese werden von Bindegewebe umgeben, in dem Blutgefäße, Lymphgefäße sowie Nervenfasern verlaufen.
