Abstract

The preceding chapters deal with a variety of issues which are important aspects of development in adolescence. However disparate they may be, these issues share two common features: they all demand a response from the young person and the response has implications for their way of thinking about themselves. The chapters vary in the emphasis they lay on each of these features or themes — in some cases coping behaviour is emphasised, in others self-concept. The general picture which emerges, serves to illustrate the importance of both coping and self-concept and the fruitfulness of considering them in relation to each other.
