Abstract
Port-wine stains (PWS) are congenital vascular nevi, characterized by a wide variation in size, localization, and color presentation. They result from a progressive ectasia of the cutaneous superficial vascular plexus. In most cases histology reveals numerous ectatic vessels in the upper and mid dermis. Several treatment modalities such as X-ray, cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen or dry ice, and surgical excision have been employed, but all with little or no success. Since the introduction of laser therapy (1, 2, 3) the prognosis of these lesions has markedly improved. The disturbing component of PWS is less the structural anomalies in the skin surface than the disfiguring color changes.
