Abstract

The goal of the mission of ESA’s astrometric satellite HIPPARCOS is to measure positions, proper motions and trigonometric parallaxes of almost 120000 stars down to the limiting visual magnitude ~ 12.m5 to an accuracy of some 2 to 4 milliarcseconds. Simultaneously, a second experiment TYCHO determines positions (less accurately) and photoelectric B, V magnitudes for about 400000 stars down to magnitude ~ 10.m5 using the star mapper of the main mission.
