Abstract
On November 1st 1988 at the Software Toolworks Chess Championship, Long Beach, California, for the first time a computer chess program beat a Grandmaster in tournament play. The program, called Deep Thought, did not beat a run of the mill Grandmaster — it beat the great Bent Larsen, — who was understandably put out about it.
