ESPRIT (European Strategic Programme for Research and Development in Information Technology) wurde 1983 von der EG konzipiert, um der europäischen Industrie eine technologische Basis zu verschaffen, und somit europäischen Produkten der Informationstechnologie eine bessere Stellung auf dem Weltmarkt zu ermöglichen.
