Nitrogen-Limited and Nitrogen-Depleted Terrestrial Ecosystems: Ecological Characteristics

  • Chapter
Nitrogen in Terrestrial Ecosystems

Part of the book series: Ecological Studies ((ECOLSTUD,volume 81))

Abstract

Nitrogen-limited ecosystems are those where primary production increases markedly if nitrogen fertilizer is supplied. Nitrogen-depleted ecosystems are those where natural or human influences have led to large losses of nitrogen from the site. Nitrogen-depleted ecosystems are usually nitrogen-limited, while the reverse may or may not be true.
