Abstract

A number of homologs of mammalian proto-oncogenes have been identified in Drosophila (for review see Shilo, 1987). These include homologs of genes encoding cytoplasmic and transmembrane tyrosine kinases, p21ras, raf, and nuclear oncoproteins. Genetic experiments in flies (Henkemeyer,et al., 1987; Bishop and Corces, 1988; van den Heuvel et al., 1989; Elkins et al., 1990) suggest that, rather than regulating cell growth, Drosophila proto - oncogenes may principally be involved in specifying cell morphology or regulating cell-cell interactions during development.
