Guanylate Cyclase in Signal Transduction of Dictyostelium Discoideum

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIH,volume 52))

Abstract

External signals that regulate cell functions are often detected by cell surface receptors and transmitted via intracellular second messengers. Such messenger molecules control a wide variety of cellular processes, such as differentiation, proliferation, intermediary metabolism, secretion, changes in cell shape and cell motility. Two of these second messengers are cyclic 3′,5′-adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic 3′,5′-guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). While the signalling system using cAMP has been studied extensively, relatively little is known about signal transduction pathways involving cGMP.
