Abstract

This paper discusses the metabolism of Ins(1,4,5)P3 and Ins(1,3,4,5)P3, with particular emphasis on the possible contribution of Ins(1,3,4,5)P4 3-phosphatase to a cyclic interconversion of Ins(1,4,5)P3 and Ins(1,3,4,5)P4. The metabolism of the inositol phosphates produced in response to receptor activation, including the characteristics of Ins(1,4,5)P3 3-kinase and of Ins(1,4,5)P3/Ins(1,3,4,5)P4 5-phosphatase, was recently reviewed in detail by Shears (1989). Current knowledge of the physiological role of these two inositol phosphates will also be outlined: for more extensive reviews, see Berridge (1987) and Berridge and Irvine (1989).
