Abstract

Members of a family of guanine nucleotide binding proteins (G-proteins) have been demonstrated to be neccessary to allow transduction of information from hormone-activated cell-surface receptors to effector systems which are either ion channels or enzymes which alter the rate of synthesis of intracellular second messengers [Gilman, 1987, Milligan, 1989]. Each of these G-proteins is a heterotrimer consisting of distinct α, β and γ subunits. A degree of genetic diversity has been noted for both β and γ subunits [Gao et al., 1987, Gautam et al., 1989], but it is at the level of the α subunits where the greatest diversity occurs. Whilst a high degree of homology exists between the individual a subunits, it is believed that the selectivity of transmembrane signalling is defined by the differences between the individual α subunits.
