Abstract
Population studies of the Blue Tit Parus caeruleus have been made chiefly in Western and Southern Europe (e.g. Källander 1976, Perrins 1979, 1990, Blondel 1985, van Balen and Potting 1990, Dhont 1989, Dervieux et al. 1990). It may therefore be interesting to complete the picture by comparative data from the northernmost part of the species’ present range, where the environmental conditions differ in many respects. The significance of new data from northern breeding areas is enhanced by the fact that the Blue Tit is a fairly new species there, after a rapid successful expansion. In southern Finland, where this study has been carried out, the species was an extremely scarce breeding bird at the beginning of the century (e.g. Palmgren 1913, Sundström 1927, Hildén 1986). Now it is almost as abundant as the Great Tit Parus major in the best habitats. The question rises, how well the Blue Tit has become adapted to this relatively recently colonized breeding area.
