The Long Wire Technique for Coronary Angioplasty

  • Conference paper
Interventional Cardiology Frankfurt 1989

Abstract

Balloon dilatation has become an accepted alternative to bypass surgery in a considerable number of patients. In 1985, a total of about 100,000 interventions were performed worldwide. Since its introduction in 1977 by Andreas Grüntzig [1], the technique has been steadily improved. Today, balloon material is available that can withstand pressures up to 14 kg/cm2. The introduction of steer-able systems by Robert Simpson has remarkably facilitated the application of angioplasty [2].
