Chemical Disarmament: Reliable and Efficient Control

  • Conference paper
Book cover Global Problems and Common Security

Abstract

Banning chemical weapons is central to stopping the arms race, reducing the danger of a new war, and attaining disarmament. Together with nuclear and bacteriological weapons, chemical arms are the most hideous instruments of mass murder. Being relatively simple to produce, these weapons are easily accessible to any country. Meanwhile, given the technological level and scale of their development, chemical weapons can inflict losses far surpassing the human toll in any feasible conventional conflict. Hence, the immediate removal of the chemical war threat is a task of paramount importance, an effort that requires the joint endeavours of all nations.
