Zusammenfassung

Die prophylaktische Lithiumbehandlung hat sich bei rezidivierenden bipolaren Erkrankungen gut bewährt und hat vielen Patienten geholfen, aber

  • Lithium ist bei unipolaren affektiven Erkrankungen und Erkrankungen mit einem Rapid-Cycling-Verlauf nicht wirksam,

  • Lithium zerstört in der Langzeittherapie die Schilddrüse und die Nieren,

  • Nebenwirkungen unter Lithium treten häufig auf und sind beschwerlich,

  • Lithium engt die Kreativität ein,

  • Lithiumintoxikationen können sich selbst bei therapeutischen Dosierungen und Serumspiegel unerwartet entwickeln,

  • die Notwendigkeit häufiger Laborkontrollen macht eine Lithiumtherapie l?stig und teuer, und

  • Lithium wird zu häufig eingesetzt.
