Abstract

Geriatric rehabilitation is the basic term for a whole series of procedures attempting to improve the health and social setting of older people who are ill and/or disabled. As a clinician, I shall dwell on those aspects with which I deal daily in my work as chief physician of a geriatric rehabilitation hospital. A geriatric rehabilitation hospital in West Germany is a special hospital for older patients with the task of providing both geriatric general care and specific measures for chlinical rehabilitation. These hospitals are subdivided into:

  1. 1.

Geriatric rehabilitation hospitals for acute care with an average hospital stay of about 40 days

  2. 2.

Geriatric rehabilitation hospitals for longer term patients with an average stay exceeding 60 days
