Abstract

I must begin this presentation by congratulating Professor Rugheimer and his excellent research team for their work on the pathophysiology of the pulmonary microcirculation in the adult respiratory distress syndrome. In vivo microscopy of the pulmonary microcirculation is an extremely difficult area, since it is fraught with many technical obstacles. Their persistance and clever solutions to the formidable problems with this technique deserve special recognition.
