Nagelmykosen hat es offenbar immer schon gegeben. Die Pilze haben die Nagelsubstanz als ein Gebiet angesehen, in dem sie sich gut ausbreiten können und in Abhängigkeit von verschiedenen Faktoren wenig gestört werden.
